Miaj novaj libroj alvenis!

My new books have arrived!

The books I bought from the UEA have arrived! I like them a lot. I know that the dictionary is good because it has swear words! They were the first words I looked for. ;-)

'Being Colloquial in Esperanto' is a very useful book. I have many Esperanto books to read, but this book is now at the top of my list.

Yesterday my fiance bought me an iPod Touch. I have already downloaded two apps to help me learn Esperanto. I have an Esperanto/English dictionary app and a flashcard app. The flashcard app isn't in Esperanto, but one can download Esperanto word-lists from the program webpage. I can also make my own flashcards! (The hyperlink to the flashcard webpage is here).

I wish I had more time to learn Esperanto with all these new toys!

  1. "...pro kiuj mi traserĉis." should be "...kiujn mi serĉis." The thing you are searching "for" in English is the direct object of serĉi in Esperanto (no "por" or "pro" needed). Example... Mi serĉas la ĝustan vorton en la vortaro. It might help to think of serĉi as meaning "to seek".

Aside from that, I only saw major problems in the last sentence of the post...

"Mi deziras ke mi havis" should use "havu" instead of "havis". (You could also say "havus" if this is an unrealistic, purely hypothetical desire, but I don't get that sense from this sentence.)

The past tense is not logical in this case even though we use past tense as a sort of poor man's subjunctive in English. Past tense is used in Esperanto only to express things that actually happened in the past. Imperatives (-u) express the speaker's desire that something should happen. Subjunctives (-us) are for verbs that are used hypothetically, conditionally, or contrafactually. Generally "deziras ke..." will almost always be followed up with an imperative verb, but a subjunctive is permissable too.

"pli tempo" should be "pli da tempo" or "plian tempon". "Pli" is an adverb, so it can't modify "tempo" as is.

"lerni Esperanton" should be "por lerni Esperanton". I'm trying to think how best to explain this, and what I'm about to write may make no sense whatsoever. Basically it comes down to the fact that we use infinitives in strange ways in English (compared to most other languages), and Esperanto doesn't always reflect English usage.

It may help to think of an Esperanto infinitive as having both some of the properties of a normal verb (e.g. an infinitive can have a direct object, although NOT a subject), and also some of the properties of a noun (an inifinitve can function as a direct object, object of a preposition, or sometimes the subject of a sentence). So for example...

    - Mi volas aĉeti libron. ("aĉeti" is the object of "volas", and "libron" is the object of "aĉeti")
    - Mi volas aĉeti libron por plibonigi mian Esperanton. ("I want to buy a book to improve my Esperanto", I have to include "por" here because while "plibonigi" can be the object of a verb, it cannot be the object of "libron" grammatically [since that's a noun], nor can it be the object of "aĉeti" logically [since I am buying a book, not buying improvement]. If alternatively I want "plibonigi" to be the object of "volas", I'd need to word it "Mi volas aĉeti libron kaj plibonigi mian Esperanton", using "kaj" instead of "por".)

I guess my advice about infinitives is, think about what relationship they have to the other words in the sentence. Or just use this quick and dirty rule of thumb: if it would make sense to say "in order to" in place of just "to", you'll need to use "por" before the infinitive.

"kun" should be "per" here. "Kun" means "with" in the sense of "together with", e.g. "mi konstruos domon kun mia amiko", while "per" means "with" in the sense of "making use of" or "by means of", e.g. "mi konstruos domon per martelo".

  2. Thank you so much again for your help, Troy! I think my main problem is that I'm trying to translate too literally from English, and since my knowledge of English grammar isn't the best my Esperanto is suffering. Hopefully the book 'Being Colloquial in Esperanto' will help me think more from an Esperanto viewpoint.

Thank you for your explanations. They make a lot of sense.

  3. Malgraux eraroj oni povas kompreni vin. Esperanto estas facile erari kaj kompreni, cxu ne?

  4. Tial mi ŝatas Esperanton! Kvankam mi ne lernas Esperanton delonge, mi jam scias sufiĉe por kompreniĝi (malgraŭ multe da eraroj en miaj blogskribaĵoj!) Mi nun volas lerni pli Esperanton por skribi kun malpli eraroj. :-)
